BILAL

Bilal Sayeed Oliver, better known by his stage name Bilal, is an American neo soul and jazz singer-songwriter and musician, who is also a member of the loose collective, the Soulquarians.

In 2001, he released his debut album 1st Born Second, which featured contributions from the Soulquarians as well as high profile producers such as Dr. Dre. The album, while critically lauded, failed to achieve any significant mainstream success, and received limited promotion (although the single "Soul Sista" became fairly popular on late night alternative radio). Despite this, Bilal managed to gain a sizable following and high attendance at his live shows, as well as much acclaim and respect from his peers, many whom noted his range and ability to sing in a freeform style, and his classically trained falsetto.

In 2002, Bilal contributed to the critically acclaimed Red Hot + Riot, a compilation CD created by the Red Hot Organization in tribute to the music and work of Nigerian musician, Fela Kuti, that raised money for various charities devoted to raising AIDS awareness and fighting the disease. He collaborated with fellow hip-hop artists Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, and Jorge Ben to remake the famous song by Fela Kuti, "Shuffering and Shmiling," for the CD.

In the following years Bilal continued to appear on projects by other artists both high profile and avant garde, while recording and developing his follow-up set to be released on Interscope Records and featuring contributions primarily from producers Dr. Dre and J Dilla (as heard by Dilla himself). These plans proved to be changeable and the final result, Love For Sale, was an album that appeared to be built around Bilal's own musicianship, with many of the tracks produced and written by the artist himself except "Something to hold onto" was produced by grammy award producer Nottz. However, near the album's completion, Interscope delayed the release date, then shelved the album indefinitely, hinting that it saw little commercial potential in it since it had already leaked online in its entirety. Online, many fans and music critics expressed their sadness that what they viewed as a carefully crafted album would be kept from a proper release. Bilal signed to Plug Research in 2009. His third album Airtight's Revenge was released September 14, 2010. Bilal has said in interviews that the album's inspiration came from the struggles of dealing with the fallout from Love For Sale. Bilal continues to tour in 2010.

KOÈJU PROJECT

Koèju is a club concept, which has established an unique combination of electronic and acoustic live music. Always with lots of guest artists, new song material and pulsating rhythms for the dancefloor. After a successful winter season with regular clubnights at Nomaden in Oslo, the Koèju project has moved to the live music / club venue at Blå.

I årene som fulgte ble det konserter og klubbopptredener på diverse steder i Oslo/Bergen som Landmark, MS Innvik, Sosialen, Emil og Samuel, Mogador, og i flere andre land, bl.a. med en rekke klubbkvelder i Shanghai i 2007 sammen med pipaspiller Tong Lan og VJ ExitNor. I september 2009 begynte en ny serie med med sessions på Nomaden, denne gangen i større format, og med et nytt musikkkonsept (inkl. gjesteartister) hver uke. Det etablerte seg raskt som et møtepunkt for musikere, mye på grunn av en litt uvanlige beatbasert jam session rettet mot et dansende publikum. Blandt gjesteartistene var Celio de Carvalho, Steinar Ofsdal, Selecta Harmony, Becaye Aw, Kenneth Ekornes, Per Zanussi, Andre Roligheten, Luison Capote, Luis Landa-Schreitt, Sara Chen, Dominic Reuben, og Underdogs International.

UNCANNY

I still remember when I landed at Torp airport as if it was yesterday. It was winter then.. and I hadn't learn the secrets of the super wool underwear yet.

I had 60 dollars in my pocket, a small book where I painted my journey from Sudan, a handbag with some cloth, a portfolio with some drawings and I was so scared as I walked into the police station at Oslo S to seek asylum. After several interviews and health checks I ended up at a small camp in Hedmark. The camp was called Hovelsåsen. It was some kilometers outside a small place called Flisa. I can't remember which one was smaller, Hovelsåsen or Flisa.

After some month, I couldn't take it any more. So I moved to Oslo. I didn't have a job or a work permit. I spent some nights in Ås with a girlfriend at her little student room. She helped me a lot. But one day she told me that she is moving to Senegal to learn the language and she thought it was better if we broke up. So, we did. And I lost the warm student room and had to move to Oslo.

It took me some nights in different parks and benches..and more nights at ”friends” places.. till one day I got a job. I had to drive and sell some stuff from Asia, at Molde Jazz Festival. When I came back, I got another Job at a small store in Markveien. Selling the same things.Every day, after we closed, I used to come back around 11 o'clock to sleep there. And this made the owner of the store really happy, cause I always "came" early to work. I tried in my free time to show my little drawings and paintings to some galleries, but I had no luck. And eventually the store closed.

One year later The store turned into some cultural cafe/bar thing. As I walked by, I start seeing people installing shows and playing concerts in my little place. They fixed it a bit, removed the back room where I use to sleep and built a nice bar and made a toilet and they named it SOUND OF MU.

Another Music is a group show of work by artists whose practice is
directly concerned with the complex relationship between image
production, music and politics. Mohammed Ali Fadlabi, a painter based in
Oslo now making new work for Kunsthall Oslo, is perhaps best known for
the controversial cover image of the Gatas Parlament record Apocalypso,
showing a Christ-like figure tied to the Norwegian flag. Luke Fowler's
documentaries question the classical concepts of musicianship and
composition, and relate them to political ideologies, particularly in
his case study of Cornelius Cardew's Scratch Orchestra. Lemi Ghariokwu's
painting was brought to world attention during his long collaboration
with Fela Kuti, and his focus remains on an agitational relationship to
the many unsolved questions of the third-world vs the first-world.
Linder Sterling is a Manchester-based artist and musician whose work,
informed by feminist ideas and Dadaist visual strategies, made a key
contribution to the politics of the punk aesthetic, and continues to
test the boundaries of mainstream taste in the interests of a future
erotic egalitarianism.

Alongside his participation in 'Another Music', Kunsthall Oslo has
invited Mohammed Ali Fadlabi to curate a project outside the gallery
space. 'The Sacred Fear' is an exhibition distributed around the city,
with works on show in a bar, a shop, a club, an office, a gallery and an
art academy. Fadlabi writes 'I never thought I was a curator. I am not
even sure I am an artist yet. And here comes a real institution asking
me to curate a show. Well, for some reason I found myself doing it
anyway. Probably because of my African upbringing. We were taught to
listen and respect those who knew better. Ladies and gentlemen, this is
a very personal show. I have chosen locations I am familiar with in Oslo
and invited friends to show their art.'

“In the Mind's I” derives its meaning from two complementary streams of thought. The first designates that place, so eloquently described as the mind's eye by the famous psychologist William James, inside the skull where the cinema of the life/world is projected and inspected. The second refers to the work of Robert Morris entitled the I-box in which a totally nude portrait of the artist is displayed beneath a capital I. In the Mind's I is a collaborative spoken word artwork in which an imaginary art exhibition consisting of three or four imaginary works is created and installed in a make-believe gallery space inside the head.

In the end what is created is totally conceptual and immaterial work of art, which persists in the memory of Warren and his collaborators, which leaves no real object to sell, distribute or gaze upon. The audience is privy to this private conversation transmitted through a microphone and witnessed as a dance of shadows displayed on a translucent screen.

Please join us for this immaterial exercise and experience of art as a modifier of mental images and memory architectures. The bar is open and food will be served.

Afrikan History Week

The 15th of this month I will be having a show with some of my african friends in Norway. The show is a part of AHW that started at 2005 and has been ever since one of the greatest things happening in our lovely Oslo.

I have been invited to this week every year almost. Just because I am black :)

Well.. what can you do when your black friends ask you to show your art?

You just go there and show some "African art" whatever that is..

The show will be at Riksscenen at 17:00 and lasts til the 19th.

The 16th there will be a debate about African artists in Scandinavia(again.. whatever that is). You will be hearing from Loulou Cherinet , Samuel Olou , Daniella Van Dijk Wennberg and Micheal O'Donnell.

ONO vs UKS

Hove Festival with GAGO

A trgicomedy in two acts

a perfomance about waiting for something to happen. the title of my work " A tragicomedy in two acts" is the subtitle for Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" (pronounced /ˈɡɒdoʊ/) a play , in which two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, wait for someone named Godot. Godot's absence, as well as numerous other aspects of the play, have led to many different interpretations since the play's premiere.

Jean Henri Dunant (May 8, 1828 – October 30, 1910), aka Henry Dunant or Henri Dunant, was a Swiss businessman and social activist. During a business trip in 1859, he was witness to the aftermath of the Battle ofSolferino in modern day Italy. He recorded his memories and experiences in the book A Memory of Solferino which inspired the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1863. The 1864 Geneva Convention was based on Dunant's ideas; in 1901 he received the first Nobel Peace Prize together with Frédéric Passy

Karin Erixon (www.karinerixon.com) and I made 40 small portraits of the man. Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Red Cross. We made as well a big portrait 300 cm x 200 with the help of the people passing by in Akerbrygge+Oslothat noon.

The portrait was made by hand prints.

The norwegian Red Cross ask me to make some art in connection with thier theme to celebrate the international day. I wanted to make an interactive piece. So i layed big white canvases for the kids who were passing by to draw whatever they wanted. after that with few strokes the kids and I, found some other kids who were missing.
